Magnolia Whispers

A Collaborative Short Film

Set in the deep South, the short explores the grim aftermath of the Magnolia family, a once-noble household that turned to dark, ritualistic magic to keep their vast corn crops thriving. To guarantee successful harvests, the family performed an ancient ritual passed down through generations. However, a missing page at the end of their spellbook doomed them. The corrupted magic turned against the family, freezing them into stone statues right where they stood. Rather than using heavy dialogue, we hid narrative clues throughout the environments from the rotting agricultural billboards outside to the family portraits, mysterious corn-tethered vines, and the smoking, torn spellbook resting in the central ritual chamber.

Technical Highlights

The short uses a continuous forward camera push, carrying the viewer from the dry, paper-textured cornfield exterior into the dark, suffocating depths of the manor's interior. We crafted a dramatic shift in color keys transitioning from the muted, sun-bleached tones of the abandoned fields into a sickly, supernatural emerald green light inside the house to emphasize the ongoing magic curse.

Outdoor elements like the corn stalks, scarecrow, and billboards were given a distinct cut-out, paper-craft quality, adding layer and depth to the 2.5D environment. the creators, Lavender Yang, Trinity Gray, Zoe Meyer, and Gabe Cornett Sourced from Free Sound while learning at KCAI Animation.

When a critical missing page from their spellbook causes a ritual to go horribly wrong, the Magnolia family is cursed their bodies turned entirely to stone as nature reclaims the manor. Clues about the family's downfall are subtle hidden in background details, torn book pages, and mysterious corn-like foliage spreading through the hallway.

By blending Southern Gothic horror themes with tactile, cut-out aesthetic techniques, Magnolia Whispers demonstrates how environmental design and subtle narrative cues can tell a complete, haunting story without relying on heavy dialogue. This project allowed us to explore high-concept worldbuilding from the ground up, pushing our creative boundaries in camera movement, color scripting, and collaborative production pipelines.
