Behind the Scenes: Bringing Overtime to Life
Welcome to a look behind the curtain of Overtime, my Junior Year final project at KCAI Animation!
Overtime was created as a high-fidelity technical vertical slice and narrative short a project designed to push my limits across every stage of a 2D animation pipeline. From visual development to the final compositing pass, here is how the project came together.
The Concept & Short Film
At its core, Overtime is built around high-stakes character acting, dynamic physical performance, and atmospheric visual storytelling.
Overtime follows a narrative centered on high-pressure moments, intense body mechanics, and expressive character acting. Designed with inspiration from vintage aesthetic cues and classic visual staging, the short places character movement front and center against stylized environments. Storyboarding, animatic production, shot staging, and visual development. Character designs, turnarounds, model sheets, and background layouts. Rough keyframing, dynamic secondary motion, clean-up, coloring, and final compositing passes.
Executing Overtime required a structured digital pipeline to maintain consistency across technical and creative passes: Animated strictly at 24 fps to maintain snappy, fluid motion and deliberate timing choices.
Toon Boom Harmony & Clip Studio Paint Used for initial rough keyframing, breakdown passes, and clean-up line work. Adobe After Effects & Premiere Pro Utilized for camera movement, visual effects, final compositing passes, and editing.
For industry recruiters and fellow animators, seeing the finished frames is only half the story. The breakdown reel below isolates specific shots from Overtime to highlight the underlying mechanics, timing charts, and pipeline layers.
Creating Overtime as a solo-directed junior project provided an incredible foundation for managing a complete production cycle. Balancing artistic vision with tight production schedules forced me to make smart staging decisions, prioritize strong keyframes, and refine my overall workflow.
